Donut King

in Florida Locales/Walt Disney World by

If you just pulled an all-nighter driving so that you can view the sun coming up over Disney World, and let’s say that it is still a bit early before sunrise, the family is asleep, and you arriving from the west. Well, you are in luck.

It happens that west of Disney, approximately 20 miles, in the town of Minneola, is a little non-descript donut shop called Donut King. Open 24 hours a day so that no sudden donut desire goes unanswered, it will fulfill all your glazed, iced, sprinkled, creme or jelly filled desires. Don’t be fooled by appearances, there is a big selection in this little building. I’ve found the selection best early in the morning. If you are there before the sun is up then that should qualify as early.

Recently, a “Hot Donuts Now” sign was placed in the window, but the wife has limited my intake so I haven’t been able to take advantage as the neon beckons me for a donut. She only has my best interest at heart.

If you are a family of four. A dozen should be good. If the family is awake, maybe two dozen.

I wasn’t on vacation but thought it might be nice to treat some co-workers to a random selection of tasty donuts. This is referred to as a Doug Dozen.

After the above picture, you may require directions.

This is my favorite Donut King donut. The Chocolate Cake. I like my donuts simple.

An overview of the selection. The bottom case selection varies.

There is more than just donuts at Donut King, so check out the menu if you are hungry.

Full disclosure…Donut King has not paid me for this post, though I wouldn’t say no to a chocolate cake donut.

4 Rivers Little Smokehouse on the Prairie

in Florida Locales by

On the patio at the Fairbanks location.

It’s not little and it’s not on the Prairie and though close, that is not the real name of one of my favorite BBQ locations.

4 Rivers Smokehouse on Fairbanks Avenue is where I go for my brisket, and in all honesty that is all I can say, but only because that is all I ever order. It’s not really all I order, sides are important too… BBQ beans and Smoked Jalapenos (Jalapenos stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon) are my usual side selections.

The 4 Rivers BBQ beans. Everything I’m looking for in a side of beans.

The Smoked Jalapeno, a perfect appetizer to the brisket platter. Two jalapenos equal one side.

This past Saturday a dilemma presented itself on my way to the office. I had dropped my wife at work on the south side of Orlando and must drive north to Maitland. On the way, just a short distance before my work exit is Fairbanks Avenue. It was approximately noon… what’s a guy to do…

Since work awaited and it is going to be a long day the brisket plate is in order. This is a cut from the point. The plate allows for three sides. I have the usual and try the potato salad.

I don’t want this to be longwinded. The pictures speak for themselves.  If you love brisket I believe you will love a trip to 4 Rivers.

Here is another picture of brisket from a previous visit.

This is another cut from the point. The point will have a bit more marbling (fat) giving you a more moist cut. If you prefer something a bit leaner then get a cut from the flat. My preference is the point, but order what you prefer and we will all be happier. Notice there is a bit more bark than the other photo. A bit of bark is always tasty.

Most of the time I ask for no sauce. The brisket can stand on its own.

After you order your meal and grab a drink you may notice tucked into the back corner of the Fairbanks location is the Sweet Shop. If you didn’t order and eat enough BBQ to make yourself uncomfortable then you obviously under-ordered. In any case, the Sweet Shop at the back of the restaurant can help you out. So far I’ve tried what I believe to be called the Coconut Bomb and a Dolly Madison. My favorite being the Coconut Bomb.

These may be labeled Cakeballs, but in the midwest, these would be referred to as Buckeyes. Always a favorite from Grandma. My wife’s family calls them peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate. That tells you all you need to know. They are pretty literal.

During the week, if you are heading to lunch at 4 Rivers on Fairbanks Avenue then be prepared to stand in line for a bit. It takes a bit of time to get through, but it moves along ok. The advantage being plenty of time to make a decision on the extensive menu.

Sidewalks Can Be Interesting! – Part 1

in Florida Locales by

You may notice that this isn’t a sidewalk and if it is, it’s a short one and it has rails running through it… that is a bad sign for a sidewalk. If your sidewalk has embedded rails don’t walk on it. Just down these tracks about a quarter mile is the SunRail Maitland Station. A sidewalk does not cross these tracks. It comes up to the tracks on the North Side and after crossing it picks up again on the South side. Nothing special about these sidewalks other than they don’t connect.

Was out for a walk today in Maitland, Florida maintaining an old habit from childhood, which is looking down at the ground while I walk. Probably not the best habit in an urban area full of cars. Me walking and looking at the ground and drivers driving and looking at their phone, not a great combination. Since I grew up in a more rural setting it wasn’t much of a problem and smartphones didn’t exist at that time (rotary was the tech of the day). Honestly, the habit is mostly a thing of the past, but today it got me involved with some sidewalks.

Leaving Jersey Mike’s after enjoying Jersey Shore’s Favorite prepared “Mike’s Way”‘ I was returning to work and noticed a section of sidewalk wasn’t the typical slab of concrete, but laid in pavers. All the pavers are square and of the typical variety being approximately 12 inches on each side. Pavers like you may see at the home improvement store. The idea and follow through took dedication from someone or some group to make the effort and place something different where a typical installation would suffice… to make the sidewalk unique.

And to “plus it” as Walt would say, accent blocks are sprinkled in to provide a bit of an artistic touch.

This is my favorite accent stone. Have always liked different depictions of the sun in various media and the detail in the concrete is well done.

Location Details at the my Orlando Map

It’s the small touches that make places unique in which they have their own character and personality. It’s in the real world and a nice break from the monotony of the typical ribbons of sidewalk. A nice find along a busy street.

Sidewalks Can be Interesting! – Part 2 will look at some residential sidewalks in Augusta, Georgia.

Chili in Florida? …Duffy’s Sports Grill, Altamonte Springs, FL

in Florida Locales/Orlando by

To borrow from Forrest Gump… Me and Chili goes together like meat and beans. That is why, even in the Florida summer I am on the lookout for a tasty bowl of red.

Duffy’s Signature Chili – Duffy’s Sports Grill of Altamonte Springs

I don’t fancy myself a chili snob, and because I’m willing to try most things once (regarding chili), I have developed a great appreciation for the regional variations. Nothing better than finding that off-the-beaten track chili parlor, ladling out a delicious bowl of chili. That’s why it is important that even in this temperate climate I seek out a Florida chili bowl to hang my hat on… so to speak.

First things first. Merriam-Webster, defining since 1828 states chili is a thick sauce of meat and chilies.  Lets leave it at that. Variations are aplenty and the debate could rage longer than the opening day lines for the Frozen ride at Epcot.

Winter is chili season… in the Midwest. I have always said “anytime is chili time” and I still believe it, but in the smothering heat of the Florida summer I’m not so sure I’m ready for a big bowl of chili, but I’m not saying I would turn it down either… maybe a small bowl would be more prudent in the summer time.

On the fine 86 degree day of October 21st, 2016, I happened upon Duffy’s Sports Grill in Altamonte Springs. Noticing the signature chili on the menu I placed my first Florida chili order and drank some sweet tea. It was a good bowl of chili. I would say midwestern style in its flavor and texture. Usually I don’t get the cheese and onions because I prefer not to cover the spice blend, but forgot to mention it. Chili making for restaurants is a balancing act. Trying to please a large group of people with various tastes makes it hard to go crazy with a spicy blend of peppers. Mild is the mark when it comes to restaurant chili.  Heat can always be added to taste.

Walt Disney was a fan of chili. What surprises me about his recipe (which I haven’t yet made), is that the spice quantities are what I would consider a bit thin. I want to make it, but based on my experience it may turn out bland. No offense Walt. Could my secret recipe be over seasoned? Not sure that’s possible in the age of super flavor. If Walt’s Chili is available at Disney World I have been unable to find it even with my Commodore 64 mad skills.

Last word. Duffy’s is more than a bowl of chili.  This post is about a bowl of chili.  The Duffy’s menu is comprehensive (so much more than chili). I have visited a number of times during lunch and am happy with the service and food quality. The place is busy during lunch and the turnaround time (because the boss watching) is good (Maybe next time you should invite the boss).

Happy New Year – 2017

in Florida Locales by

The year 2016 came and went in the blink of an eye and here I sit with a clean slate of possibilities for 2017.  All the 2016 resolutions will roll over to the new year in order to start anew. The year 2016 completes our first full year in Florida and there are a few things of note that you don’t think much about when you are living in the midwest.  Here are few things I have learned this past year…

  • The palm trees in the yard need to be trimmed quite often.  I only trimmed the trees in the north when a branch was sickly.  Here the fronds begin to droop and brown. Ours (queen palm) produces a fruit bundle that weighs 40 to 50 pounds, which if not cut soon begin to drop the small balls which kind of stink up the yard.  It also produces a long spear that can provide a nice puncture wound or rip one of the screens on the lanai. Which brings us to the next item.
  • The lanai. I always called it a screened in porch growing up in Illinois, but here it is a lanai. Either way I’m not complaining.  It does sound more relaxing when you say “I’m going to hang on the lanai” The origin is Hawaiian so there you go.
  • It’s easy to weed the flower beds or anywhere for that matter. The whole yard is sand.  Hidden under the grass is sand… and lots of it. Many times when Dad had me digging holes in Illinois I would mutter my dislike for the clay soil that seemed to be everywhere in our yard.  In Florida the muttering is at a minimum when I break out the shovel.
  • There is a reason the retired folks head south in the winter.  It is downright beautiful weather in the winter months.  Those months when I was shoveling snow, chipping ice, power sliding in the school parking lot (I do miss that), are forgotten when you are debating whether to wear the white shorts after labor day or bring a jacket to the park because it might get a bit chilly when the sun goes down on a beautiful January day.  For comparison… here is a shot of our Indiana driveway after a January 2014 snow and a Walt Disney World Monorail shot from January 2015.

  • There is a reason the retired folks head north at the winter’s end.  It gets smokin hot in the summer. Heat and humidity are both high. It makes it hard to breathe sometimes for new runners like myself, but moderation is the key with lots of liquids.
  • Walt Disney World cannot be done in a day, a week or even a year.  There is so much to see and do.  The World is huge and depending on the current “stage” of your life not everything may appeal to you, but there is something for everyone. You may feel you have outgrown something, but rest assured there will be 20 things waiting to take its place.  You may outgrow it, move on, and then come back years later appreciating it from a different perspective that can only come with your increased years on planet earth.
  • It is hard to work for a living in the vacation kingdom of Orlando.  There is so much you want to see, activities you want to do, but one still needs to earn a living, mow the lawn, trim the palm trees, and maintain the house.

They say you can’t do it all, but this year were going to get as close to “all” as humanly possible.  Here is to a Happy and Healthy 2017 wherever you may find yourself.

Yellow Dog Eats – Gotha FL

in Florida Locales by

A favorite find is a restaurant that is a local creation, has a unique personality and great food. These places don’t need to be a part of the hottest retail strip or an overwhelming marketing push. There is a “feel” to the place from the moment you walk through the door or step on the patio. Chains try to mimic the homegrown vibe, but it’s an experience hard to replicate.

I believe the personality of the creator (Fish) is part of the ambiance at Yellow Dog Eats (make sure to read Jayme’s profile too). I knew it was going to be an experience to our liking as we approached the newly restored VW bus walking in from the parking lot, saw the irreverent signs, chalk art, and cool 70’s like flashing lights on the patio.

Those who were fortunate enough to be present at the creation (thanks Dean Acheson) of Yellow Dog Eats witnessed something special, fortunately they passed their good fortune and good find on to other family and friends who visit and pass the good experiences and good vibes down the line. Which brings us to a big Thank You to our neighbors who were so kind to invite us to share lunch and introduce us to Yellow Dog Eats!

Words are not enough. I will let the food photos speak with their obvious tasty goodness.

All food descriptions are directly from the Yellow Dog Eats Menu.

1/2 Rack of Ribs with “Gold” Sauce. $9.95

This was my choice for lunch.  Fish’s Gold Sauce is a perfect compliment to the tender ribs. A large side of the “Gold” Sauce is served with the ribs. I didn’t make use of the extra sauce as not to drown the ribs. (Not that there is anything wrong with that). The ribs can stand alone if you so desire… which I desired.

The dry rub salmon stood out from across the table. The salad is top notch.
