Disney’s Express Transportation – Walt Disney World Resort

in Walt Disney World by

There’s a new way to get around Walt Disney World parks and it’s a VIP experience!!

If you have been to Walt Disney World Resort recently, you know all about getting through security and bag checks… Wouldn’t you love if you only needed to pass through a security checkpoint once per day? Now you can!!

If you have a Park Hopper ticket or are an Annual Passholder, you can add Disney’s Express Transportation option and only go through security and bag check once each day – even if you hit all 4 parks – giving you more time in the parks! Disney’s Express Transportation picks you up and drops you off INSIDE the parks!

Start your day in one park, using the normal security checkpoint, and when you are ready to head to the next park simply check-in at the Express Transportation kiosk location inside the park and a Cast Member will escort you backstage to your VIP transportation.

Purchase your Express Transportation access at any ticket window outside a park, Guest Relations inside a park, Disney Springs ticket window, your hotel concierge, or at the kiosks at the Express Transportation check-in locations and you are ready for VIP transportation for one day for date of purchase or up to 7 consecutive days beginning on date of purchase. Advance purchase is not yet available.

Disney’s Express Transportation service departs approximately every 30 minutes and runs each day from 10:00 AM until park closing. Your VIP Express Transportation will travel directly between each of the theme parks, no stops along the way, and drops you off inside the park so you are ready for fun from the moment you arrive! You will have unlimited transfers between all 4 theme parks for as long as your Express Transportation ticket is valid.

Price per Guest (Ages 3+)
Single-day ticket: $19 – Valid for date of purchase only
Multi-day ticket: $29 – Valid for up to 7 consecutive days beginning on date of purchase
*NOTE: Pricing and availability are subject to change.

I took advantage of Disney’s Express Transportation during my last stay at Walt Disney World Resort. It was so quick and easy to get from one park to another. This VIP experience is definitely the way to go, especially if you have little ones with strollers and bags, and I felt the price was very fair!!

**Please Note: The Express Transportation add-on service at Walt Disney World Resort will end Wednesday, August 23, 2017. The last day for guests to purchase this service will be Wednesday, August 16, 2017.

Rivers of Light – Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park

in Orlando/Stay on Property/Walt Disney World by

The long awaited ‘Rivers of Light’ at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park has finally made it’s debut!

Rivers of Light is located in the park’s Discovery River lagoon between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest. It features water fountains, mist screens, floating lanterns, fire effects, lasers, lights, fog, projection mapping as well as live performers and incorporates the park’s Tree of Life into the show too.

This new nighttime experience celebrates the beauty of all living things. With a brilliant fusion of water, sound and light, it’s a unique experience that will entertain the whole family!

Rivers of Light is staged in the middle of the Discovery River, with seating split in two sections: on the shores of Asia in front of Expedition Everest, and along the banks of DinoLand U.S.A. in front of Finding Nemo—The Musical. All of the seats in Asia – half of the show’s 5,000 seats – are reserved for Guests with FastPass+. The other half of the seats, on the DinoLand side, are for those booking the Rivers of Light dining packages (available at Tusker House or Tiffins) and for standby Guests. There are also very limited, partially obstructed viewing areas around the river. I have viewed from all 3 areas and I highly recommend the dining package viewing area if you plan to see this new experience!

As sunlight fades, the ‘stars’ begin to twinkle in the trees surrounding Discovery River. A vibrant awakening of flitting fireflies leading to a ceremonious procession across the water of floating lotus blossoms that morph into colorful dancing fountains and over-sized animal sculptures – tiger, turtle, elephant, and owl – that light up in various colors.

The show begins with four flickering, lotus flower lanterns floating on the lagoon. They’re soon joined by shamans. The shamans conjure the forces of fire and water to reveal the majesty of the natural world, mostly as video projections on a huge water screen projected at the back of the lagoon.

In the final moments, the largest lotus sprouts a blazing tower. This magnetic display culminates in a triumphant blend of song, light, color and earthly elements. We are all bound together by earth and spirit — past, present and future.

Rivers of Light joins other nighttime experiences recently added to Animal Kingdom, including the sunset Kilimanjaro Safaris, Discovery Island Carnivale, Harambe Wildlife Parti and the Tree of Life awakening. Be sure to watch the video posted above, my photos do not do this show proper justice!

A trip to Tiffins Restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom*

in Walt Disney World by

Tiffins Coaster. For clarity we shall call this the “front of the coaster”.

Why the asterisk? The post title needs additional detail, but I didn’t want it to be too long and off putting in the header. The full title is “A trip to Tiffin’s Restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which sits right at the entrance of the soon to be opening Pandora – The World of AVATAR… and we wished to visit before the crush of humanity makes it impossible to leisurely stroll directly to the restaurant entrance”. That being said, if you want to visit this restaurant (which I recommend), then you had better take advantage of the My Disney Experience app, or online reservations, or by phone (the old fashion way) and make your reservations early.

From the start, as we entered the restaurant I was drawn to the decor and overall general laid back atmosphere. This restaurant trip could be referred to as a “cold call” since no prior research of the restaurant was done by myself, and it is a pleasant surprise to be pleasantly surprised. I’m not saying that no planning was done, since the hardest working travel planner in the travel planning business, Crystal, booked our reservation for the monthly Disney Dining Excursion.

It’s hard to say what put me at ease as we entered the restaurant, but the look and warm glow of wood finishes is something that has always been a favorite of mine… then again it could have been the easily accessible restrooms just to the right of the hostess stand. Everybody has their thing. As we enter through the double doors of square glass panes and wood carvings the hostess station is directly in front. I advise any guest to make good use of their wait time, turn around and take a look at the carvings as you enter the building (after you check in of course). The wood carvings throughout are something to admire. The colors glowed of warm gold, browns and copper.

We dined in Tiffin’s Grand Gallery and of all the Walt Disney World restaurants we have enjoyed since starting the monthly Disney Dining Experience, this is my favorite room. Why?… two reasons. 1. The room decor is a pleasure to view throughout the meal. Each wall is unique. 2. The Grand Gallery is smaller and has a more laid back pace. The hustle and bustle you may experience at some of the large open dining rooms doesn’t seem to be prevalent at the Tiffin’s.

We had 3:15pm dining reservations and the obviously the crowd was thinning a bit, but we did wait at least 20 minutes beyond our confirmed dining reservation time. An interesting point brought up by this tripadvisor review concerns the dining package for reserved seating at Rivers of Light. This review contradicts my laid back statement… so you may wish to consider your dining times when making your reservation.

Entering Grand Gallery

Being a bit surprised at the size of the dining area (not that I’m complaining), we questioned our server and he enlightened us to the layout of the restaurant. There are three dining rooms. The Grand Gallery, Safari Gallery, and the Nomad Lounge.  Table seating in the Bar at Nomad Lounge does require a reservation except at the bar. See paragraph one, last sentence. There isn’t a feeling that you are being turned quickly and the pace of the wait staff is relaxed. The setting is conducive to easy conversation with your fellow diners.

Unless of course you don’t want conversation with your fellow diners then I would recommend Chef Mickeys. We love that place, there is a lot of activity at all times; a monorail overhead; special visits from the Mouse himself and guests; and you can leave the table at any time to get some food. For example, your table mate starts to speak,  and you say “Excuse me I need to go get another plate of Filet of Beef and some dessert.” If that is said to you don’t take it personally now that you know the secret.

View of the totems from our table. Totems, must not have been happy with me as they were putting out fuzzy vibes towards my picture.

Why are we here? That is a deep question and my answer has always been… we are here to eat. Someone has to do it and it might as well be me. Unfortunately it isn’t an appetizer sort of day for us and we proceed directly to the Main Courses. The meal consists of a two Berkshire Pork Tenderloins ($39), Pan-seared Duck Breast ($39) and Grilled Swordfish ($42).

Although no appetizers today, bread is still provided. It is hard to describe, but I can say with some authority it is “not like Wonder”. The consensus at the table was a bit mixed. Initially I considered sweet, but then changed my mind to not. I probably ate most of the bread so that tells you where I stand. The Pomegranate Olive Oil added a unique flavor to the bread.

The Berkshire Pork Tenderloins are the favorite of the evening. Ordered by two of the four at the table. As described from the menu. A Masa Tamale (which was very tasty I might add), Hominy Succotash, Red Mole Sauce. The Hominy brought back memories of my childhood, but this time I wasn’t complaining… not saying I didn’t like Mom’s Hominy, but this was very good with its sprinkling of sweet corn and lima beans.

Grilled Swordfish. Being from the midwest we are familiar with our cuts of meat and the methods in which they are prepared. My wife enjoyed a portion of the fish, but the remainder was a bit rare to her liking. Apparently the swordfish should be prepared on the rare side and being from the midwest fish cooking requirements is a new experience. As a preference my wife doesn’t enjoy food on the rare side.

Pan-seared Duck Breast. From the menu: Leg Confit…. the obvious question… what is that? Apparently it a classic way to prepare duck. Basically it is frying the meat in oil, but at a much lower temperature. More Confit details are at Serious Eats. Continuing the menu… Forest Mushrooms… sounds straightforward… mushrooms from the forest, Parsnip Puree, Truffle Reduction, Huckleberry Compote. Crystal reports the duck was excellent.

Overall an enjoyable trip. A good dinner and fun time was had by all. It’s a place we will add to the return in the future list.

There are more photos to share from the Tiffins visit and you can view them here at Doug Travels Orlando Facebook page.

For consistency to the start, we shall refer to this as the “back of the coaster” and The End. See you at the parks. 🙂

Independence Day Celebration – Walt Disney World Resort

in Walt Disney World by

As with any Disney experience, Independence Day celebrations throughout Walt Disney World Resort parks will not disappoint! And if you are thinking about celebrating the Independence Day holiday at Walt Disney World Resort, now is the time to confirm your resort reservation.

If you plan to experience the holiday celebrations I highly recommend planning for both July 3 and July 4 to be sure to see it all!

“Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” is a special fireworks display above Cinderella’s Castle at Magic Kingdom Park presented on both July 3 and 4 at 9 p.m while Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios celebrate only on July 4.

At Magic Kingdom Park, in my opinion, the best spot to view the fireworks from is the hub in front of Cinderella’s Castle. “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” is a spectacular celebration of freedom with a dazzling stage show and an astonishing fireworks display choreographed to music! The park stays open late so after fireworks you can plan to enjoy dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant or Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen – remember to make your advance dining reservations!

Just a quick note about viewing areas – when viewing from the hub area in front of the castle, you can see the stage show as well as the fireworks above. You can also experience the spectacular fireworks show from all around Magic Kingdom Park as well as from the resorts around the Magic Kingdom Park area. If you happen to be close to the Fantasyland area, you can get a great view of the fireworks overhead, the Beast’s Enchanted Castle is a good location to view from too. These areas are less crowded and you can hear the music and see the fireworks show, you just won’t be able to see the stage show.

Both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot will also offer Independence Day fireworks and celebrations only on July 4th. Each park will display their normal “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Fireworks” and “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” and each will include the addition of an all-American grand finale celebrating the United States of America. Epcot’s Independence Day fireworks display is typically at 10 pm and Disney’s Hollywood Studios is typically at 10:15 pm so you would not be able to experience both… In my opinion, the all-American grand finale at Epcot is simply AMAZING (I may have even cried a little)!! And, – if you are lucky enough to experience a little bonus pixie dust – once the Epcot fireworks end, depending on where you are viewing from, stick around for a bit because you just might be able to clearly see Disney’s Hollywood Studios fireworks display, which is also spectacular!

And even though Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park does not offer any special Independence Day festivities, don’t skip a visit to this park – it also offers exciting experiences to explore. Many store and restaurant fronts have been refurbished and you can enjoy a quick service lunch at Harambe Market. Harambe Market is an outdoor marketplace with African-inspired street food at four walk-up windows and plenty of shaded seating. Offerings include Grilled Chicken Skewer and Sausage Fried in Curried Corn Batter, both come with a light Roasted Broccoli and Tomato Salad. Also offered are ribs and a beef kabob flatbread.

An Independence Day celebration at Walt Disney World Resort is definitely a magical experience. Crowd levels are typically higher, but my experience has been lighter than anticipated. And while it is hot during the day, it is bearable. Just remember to take breaks often, drink water and look for inside experiences available at all parks. I highly recommend the July 4th holiday as a good time to visit Walt Disney World Resort!

Ghirardelli makes a stop at Epcot Food and Wine

in Walt Disney World by

20160919_115744-1
A great view as we near the festival center. In the “old” days this probably would have qualified as a Kodak Picture Spot.

The Festival Center at Epcot is a giant building tucked away between the Universe of Energy and Mission Space. Tucked away as best a giant building can be, with some strategic landscaping and other giant buildings on either side for disguise. Apparently the future consisted of large buildings and not tiny houses… but I digress. The festival building is the building formally known as The Wonders of Life Pavilion.  I’m all in with Wonder… and Life, but this “demoted from the ranks” pavilion, like Pluto or Lake Champlain, didn’t really draw our families attention during the yearly visits in the 2000’s, we never made an appearance at this pavilion.

That is… not until 2016 when taking a break from the food and the wine we decided to see what the festival building had in its friendly confines (Cubs reference). I would say it is exactly as described.  A festival center. There were more people hanging around than I expected.  The gift shop was doing a brisk business, appeared to be few tables available in the cafe… unless this was also the Chew stage… I didn’t look close enough to make the differentiation.  I had spotted my Festival Center destination and now wasn’t the time to be window shopping.

20160919_121036I was truckin by the cafe when my eyes noticed the Ghiradelli sign. Nothing fancy or in huge letters, but the title of the exhibit and name of the sponsor.  Always eager to learn about chocolate and nab a complementary Ghirardelli square (my favorite is the salted caramel) there is no time to waste.

In Disney terms it would be considered a fairly simple straightforward display.  Around a center console and along the wall is a brief outline of the process from which chocolate is derived.  Good… interesting… you won’t have to jockey for position to read the story.  That’s ok.

Along another wall is a series of what I would refer to as dioramas. Each of these dioramas feature scenes containing chocolate sculptures of characters from Disney movies or newly acquired movie franchises… you may know where I’m going with that one… may the force be with you.

From the Festival Center events page, it states the following about the display of chocolate figures… “enjoy amazing chocolate sculptures created by the master chefs at Walt Disney World Resort.”  I really enjoyed these sculptures and took a lot of photos.  Unfortunately what I didn’t take was the a photos of the creators names of these chocolate masterpieces. You will need to go read those for yourself.

I recommend a side trip to the Festival Center to check out the Ghiradelli carved chocolate scenes. It’s something a bit different than the typical attractions, and it shows the skill and creativity of the these individuals. Maybe I’m not an impartial subject since it reminds me of the sculptured butter cow my Grandma would take me to see each year at the Illinois State Fair. Who doesn’t love carved butter in the shape of a cow. Isn’t it poetic.

The display was enjoyable to my wife and I and there are plenty of photos following that shows my favorites (which is pretty much everything), but we weren’t dragging any kids away from a Frozen meet and greet. Not sure how entranced kids will be with this display. Sure they would like the molded chocolate characters and the nod to Star Wars,  but they may not appreciate the talent required or materials used. Certain that they would eat the complimentary chocolate square though.

A Bug’s Life…

Heimlich – My favorite character from this movie. A good Heimlich quote for life. “Francis, leave them alone, they are poo-poo heads.”

Don’t know these two characters. Can you help me out?

Flik on the right.

Not from A Bug’s Life…

20160919_120929
This was a scene with wildlife which was very well done. Not sure what Disney reference from which this was created. Lots of glare and smears on the glass of this display. Apparently some people wanted a close look.

Ratatouille… I enjoyed the movie, but there is something about Rats and food that gives me the willies, though I would eat a rat made of chocolate.

20160919_122152
Love the detail of the fur coats and the side items. All created from chocolate.

20160919_122203
This was my favorite layout of the displays. The use of the cheese wheels (chocolate wheels) and the rats is a nice touch.

20160919_122212
Another cheese wheel and well carved chocolate vegetables. Vegetables on my plate are mostly for display too.

Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen – Magic Kingdom Park

in Walt Disney World by

Looking for something a little different for your dining experience at Walt Disney world Resort? Check out Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen at Magic Kingdom Park! Located in Adventureland, this table service dining experience is definitely one to try.

Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen is a Table Service dining experience and does require advance reservations. When it’s time for your dining experience, your Skipper Server will greet you and gave you a quick tour of the restaurant before seating you at your table. The theming of the restaurant is unique and it is much larger than expected, with three separately themed dining areas. The service is up to Disney standards and the menu offers a variety of distinctive selections, including African, American, Asian, and Latin cuisine. Currently the lunch and dinner menus are the same with an 11:30 am opening time for lunch and dinner beginning at 3:00 pm.

Upon seating, your server will deliver a plate of complimentary Ambasha Bread With Honey-Infused Dip, which is very sweet. There is also a good variety of appetizers to share; one of our favorites is the Falls Family Falafel which is a tasty and light start to your meal. The entrées offer a nice selection of choices, my favorite being the “A lot at Steak” Salad; Thai-marinated Flank Steak tossed with Hearts of Romaine, Carrots, Red Peppers, Cucumbers, Red Onions, and Cherry Tomatoes with Asian Dressing. And, of course, a family favorite is the Skip’s Mac & Cheese, consisting of Spiced Ground Beef, Pasta, and Béchamel Sauce served with Broccoli. You will find the meals to be very delicious and perfectly prepared! And, if you are like me, you can’t ever pass up dessert, especially with the delicious selections offered… I chose the Kungaloosh! OH MY… This African-inspired Chocolate Cake with Caramelized Bananas served with Cashew-Caramel Ice Cream topped with Coffee Dust was oh so absolutely delicious and was actually very light. Just enough for one (okay, maybe two)!

Overall, this is a more adventurous dining menu with a little bit of spice and, as with other Walt Disney World Resort restaurants, there is a kid friendly menu for your little ones. I highly recommend Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen and hope you choose to experience this dining adventure on your next visit to the Walt Disney world Resort too!

*Please note, park admission is required for this dining experience.

Croissant Doughnut…. Croughnut?… Cronut? at Epcot

in Walt Disney World by

There’s a place in Epcot that at one time Ray Kroc would have been proud to see… a hybrid McDonald’s selling smakerals of their signature food to theme park goers. Alas, it is no more (when it went to the big fryer in the sky I do not know). In its place there is a simple menu with only one item that I really care about. That would be the Croissant Doughnut… Croughnut. I like this spelling.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE CROISSANT DOUGHNUT.

This trip was designed specifically for a Croughnut. If you visit Epcot for no other reason but a Croughnut, then it will have been worth it.  Whoa… slow down… Dougie. That may not quite be true if you are vacationing on a non-hopper ticket. Then you will definitely want to see more than a Croughnut… maybe two Croughnuts… no… better see some of the other attractions.

My point is this should be a stop for the family.

But, beware. There are some shady characters who may want to sample your Croughnut. I heeded the advice of the sign and didn’t feed the wildlife. Not because of my concern that they will get aggressive, but because I wanted the Croughnut all to myself. From the picture below it appears that we are beyond wildlife acclimation to the Croughnut diet. It seems he knows what it’s all about.

LOOK INTO MY EYEEEES! GIVE ME YOUR CROUGHNUT!

The Croissant Doughnut is currently going for $4.99.

Other than the Croughnut and a water, that is the extent of my culinary experience at this location.  I haven’t paid attention to the other featured items, but notice in this picture… I’m a bit taken aback by the Godiva Hot Cocoa with Godiva Liqueur at $9.50. After a bit of research I found that the Godiva Liqueur is 15% alc/vol.  It is a bit more than just a hot cocoa. That may go well with the Croughnut in wintertime and should provide your daily sugar intake requirements.

TUNNEL VISION FOR THE CROUGHNUT.

The Refreshment Port is located just as you enter World Showcase and make the right hand turn towards Canada. It will be to your right. To your left is a lake. Bring our Canadian friends a Croughnut, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind some fried dough, cinnamon and sugar… word on the street is that Canadians enjoy a good doughnut or a Timbit.

THE REFRESHMENT PORT IN ALL ITS GLORY.

Educational Note for Ray Kroc – In 1917 Ray lied about his age and joined the Red Cross to be an ambulance driver. Thought it an interesting similarity to another gentleman from that era.

Shout-Out Note to the Johnson Family for introducing us to the tasty Croughnut.
